The name “Amethyst” comes from the Ancient Greek, meaning "intoxicate", a reference to the belief that the stone protected its owner from drunkenness. It was also used in Ancient Egypt and in Medieval Europe where it was believed to heal people and keep them cool-headed.

Tibetan culture considers Amethyst sacred to the Buddha and it is considered the birthstone of February. In the Middle Ages, it was considered a symbol of royalty and until large deposits were found in Brazil in the 18th century, Amethyst was included in the cardinal, or most valuable, gemstones (along with Diamond, Sapphire, Ruby, and Emerald).

Amethyst is considered tremendously powerful in healing and to bring intense spiritual growth as a stone of spiritual protection and purification; cleansing one's energy field of negative influences and attachments. It creates a resonant shield of spiritual Light around the body.

It is said to be a natural tranquiliser, relieving stress, soothing  irritability, balancing mood swings, and dispelling anger, fear and anxiety, alleviating sadness and grief, and dissolving negativity.
